Q&A

By Marla Stefanelli

What can I do to add weight to garment hems so they hang better?
Jeanne B.,

Let the garment fabric help determine which product to choose. Test the end result by placing a cord in the hemline fold and pinning up the hem in several places. Try on the garment to see if there is enough, or too much, weight for the desired effect.

For light- to mediumweight fabrics, apply narrow cording along the hemline fold on the fabric wrong side. Stitch the cord to the fabric about every inch, so it won't shift or move after the garment is completed (6). When stitching, catch just a thread or two of the fabric, or make sure the stitches are on the hem allowance (inside the garment) when completed.

For heavyweight fabrics add more weight to the hem with drapery beads--a string of metal beads enclosed in a fabric tube. Apply it as you would plain cording.
