Q&A

By Marla Stefanelli

The points on my shirt collars keep curling up. How can I prevent this?
Pat S.,

The collar points will turn up if there isn't enough fabric on the upper collar to allow for the "turn of cloth" along the foldline.

If the collar is constructed from two pattern pieces, compare the two. Place the undercollar over the upper collar, matching the notches and dots. The upper collar should be about 1/8" larger at the outside edge to allow for the turn of cloth (5).

When there is only one pattern piece for both the upper- and undercollar, cut the fabric for the upper collar slightly larger, similar to what's shown in figure 5. The smaller undercollar will help keep the points pulled in.

You can also try cutting the upper collar on the bias. The collar will lie smoother around the curve of your neck, and the points will stretch to prevent curling.
