Q&A

By Amy Stalp

I live in a small one-bedroom apartment and I need ideas for storing my quickly growing fabric collection.

Not every seamstress has a dream sewing room that's large enough to hold her machines and other sewing goodies. The best solution when you don't have much storage space is to create it in unexpected places.

Purchase furniture that can be used for multiple purposes. For example, use a trunk, chest or ottoman as both a coffee table and as fabric storage.

Use under-the-bed boxes to stash fabric and sewing supplies. Find clear plastic boxes at mass-merchandise and home-improvement stores. The boxes slide easily under the bed when you're not using them. To create more room, put the bed on purchased risers so you can put bigger boxes underneath.

Store sewing supplies and fabric on bookshelves. If the bookshelves are in a room where you don't want the supplies to show, such as the living room, sew curtains that match the room's décor and hang them in the bookshelves using spring rods. You'll create storage and add color to the room.

Purchase large plastic bins and store them under tables and desks. Cover the bins with fabric if you don't want them to show. Covered with fabric, the bins can also double as end tables.
