Q&A
By Ellen Marchant
I'm traveling to my daughter's wedding via airplane and need to bring my machine for dress alterations. What's the best way to transport my sewing machine on an airplane?
Diane M.,

The best way to transport a sewing machine is to put it back in the original packaging and generously tape the box. Ask the airline for their requirements regarding travel with specialty items, such as golf clubs, skis or, in your case, a sewing machine. Each airline has specific packaging guidelines. Some airlines have a "gate valet&quo; for first-class treatment of your machine (and other items, such as strollers). It'll be loaded last, unloaded first and handled with care. (If you're worried about airline attendants mishandling the machine, ship it prior to the wedding; obtain proper insurance and delivery confirmation if desired.)
Depending on the machine's size, you may be able to carry it on the plane in a wheeled tote or sewing machine case. However, the machine usually won't fit below the seat in front of you and will need bubble wrap or extra padding when placed in an overhead compartment. Check with the airline as to weight restrictions for overhead bins. Remember to remove the needle from the machine and pack the needle along with scissors, pins and other sharp sewing tools in a separate checked bag.
Lightweight portable sewing machines are great for travel.
There are several lightweight portable sewing machines readily available. You may want to invest in such a machine, as they're great for taking to classes and moving throughout the house, not to mention taking on an airplane. Or, better yet, purchase a state-of-the-art machine after you arrive at your destination and give it to your daughter as a wedding present. Use it for the alterations, and then offer the machine to your daughter. You won't have to worry about anything happening to your beloved machine and your daughter will be happy as a clam.
