Q&A | Slip & Slide

By Linda Lee

Most of the readymade shirts and blouses I purchase slip to the back. The neck rides up in front and the back of the neck slips down. What causes this and how do you alter a pattern to fix it?
Mary

Many of us work at computers (some of us get to sew all day) and perform other tasks that require us to bend over a work surface for more hours than we’d like. Our shoulders roll forward as we work and age. So garments are no longer balanced on our unbalanced bodies. The following is a great way to alter patterns to balance the shoulders and allow them to hang better without annoyingly riding back.

Remove from ¼” to ½” from the shoulder seam on the front pattern piece, depending on the degree of “stoop” in your shoulders (1).

Add the same amount that you removed from the front seam to the back shoulder seam (2).

Move the shoulder dot on the top of the sleeve forward the same distance (3).
