Q&A

By Don Ford

My sewing machine is running slower and slower these days. Is it on its last legs?
Betty W.,
Washington, D.C.

Your machine isn't dying. Follow these instructions to have it running like new:

Loosen the flywheel as you would when winding a bobbin. This completely disengages the machine movement so only the motor will turn.

Depress the foot pedal all the way and let the machine run continuously for two to three minutes.

Listen for the motor to speed up, gradually cleaning itself in the process. Follow this procedure every three months and your machine should purr like a kitten. If not, consult your sewing machine dealer.
