Q&A

By Marla Stefanelli

My three daughters are getting married this year. I'm making their bridal veils and want to know how to finish the veil edges with and without ribbon.

It's best to finish the veil edges while the fabric is flat, before it's gathered to create the veil.

To finish the veil with ribbon, use a cording foot to guide the ribbon as you sew. Topstitch the ribbon to the fabric 1/4" from the edge, overlapping the ends. Carefully trim the excess fabric close to the ribbon. Practice this technique on a scrap before stitching on the actual veil.

For a simple edge finish, serge a rolled hem. Follow your machine manual for setting up the serger, and stitch from the right side.

Or finish the edge with perle cotton using the same method as the ribbon. Set the machine for a narrow zigzag, and stitch over the perle cotton 1/4" from the veiling edge. Overlap the ends and apply seam sealant or glue to secure the ends.Trim the fabric close to the stitching.
