Warm & Wooly

Set the Pony Free

Instead of bunching your ponytail up under your hat, create an opening in the back for it to hang free.

When joining the back seam, start the seam 5" from the lower edge and stitch to the top of the crown.

Finish the open-seam edges with a blanket stitch (see Embellish With Embroidery for instructions for a blanket stitch and the running stitch).

Use the pattern to cut one oval from the sweater. Blanket stitch around the oval to finish the edges. Stitch one-half of the oval to the right side of the back seam with a running stitch just inside the buttonhole stitch.

Cut a 1" piece of coordinating hook-and-loop tape. Machine stitch the loop portion to the underside of the oval. Stitch the hook portion to the hat, aligning it under the loop piece.

From the Sew Up the Holidays 2006 issue of Sew News magazine.
