Let It Snow

Throughout the Year

When snow season is past, use satin-stitch building blocks to create other designs.

Set the machine for a line of short scallops. Begin stitching, spiraling around and outward and lengthening the scallop as you go, creating a rose. Finish with a satin-stitch dot at the center (A).

Repeat a button-attachment stitch four to six times in a circular pattern to create a tiny blossom or the center of a larger bloom (B).

Stitch eyelets to create flower buds or grapes (C).

Stitch one long, flat-edged scallop from a central point outward, then pivot and stitch another scallop back toward the center. The back-to-back scallops make a daisy petal; stitch several to create an entire flower (D).

Make summer bugs from satin-stitch motifs. Long diamonds form the body, and shapes with long stitch lengths create airy gossamer wings. Use a narrow zigzag for antennae, with slightly wider zigzag knobs at the tips. Use metallic or sparkly thread for added appeal (E).

Rebecca Kemp Brent is a freelance author, educator and designer. After more than thirty years of experience with sewing and needlework, she still finds new and unexplored possibilities on a regular basis.
