A Ribbon Runs Through It

The Cocarde

MATERIALS

  • 2 yards of 1 1/2"-wide ribbon (If you choose a wider ribbon than listed, you'll need more yardage.)

At one ribbon end, turn under 1/2" and press in place. With the finished end to your right, turn the ribbon wrong side up. Fold the upper right corner down to meet the lower edge of the ribbon. With a doubled thread, sew the pressed ribbon end to the long edge (10).

Fold the ribbon tail (on the left) down to form a point; leave a 1/8" gap between the ribbon edges (11). The gap provides folding ease.

Fold the piece in half with the gap as the centerline, and align the diagonal folds (12). One full point has been completed.

Begin another "point," folding the ribbon tail to the left and leaving a 1/8" gap between the ribbon edges (13).

Fold up the lower half using the gap as the centerline and aligning the diagonal folds. Whipstitch through the corner (14), leaving the thread and needle to hang.

Fold the ribbon tail down, making another point (see figure 11). Continue folding, following figures 11 through 14 until you have 21 points and ending with figure 11. Turn under the ribbon's raw end and secure with small stitches.

Pull the inside thread taut and adjust the fullness. Securely whipstitch every few points. Make a circle by joining the first point to the last, forming a cocarde.
