A Ribbon Runs Through It
Pleated Ribbon Fold
Formerly used to adorn hats and horse bridles, this ribbon design can be used as an ornament, to decorate a gift package, or applied to a napkin ring or a place card.
MATERIALS
- 1/4 yard of 2"-wide ribbon, plus additional ribbon to wrap the package
- 3 1/2" of 1/4"-wide coordinating ribbon, for gathered center, plus any additional for wrapping the package
Begin with the 2"-wide ribbon. Fold under one end 1/4" and tack in place. Pinch a 1/4"-deep pleat along one side edge, reducing the pleat to nothing at the opposite side. Secure the pleat using tiny, invisible stitches, 1/4" from the pleated edge (6).
Continue pleating the ribbon every 1/4" along one side of the ribbon, stitching after every pleat. The ribbon will form a circle. Once a full circle is complete, turn the ribbon raw end under 1/4" and slipstitch in place.
On the 1/4"-wide ribbon, turn under one short end and hand stitch in place. Sew a running stitch along one edge of the ribbon, and pull the thread to gather the ribbon into a tight circle. Turn under the ribbon raw end and stitch the two ends together in a circle (7).
With both ribbons right side up, pin the completed circle to the middle of the large, pleated ribbon. Hand stitch the ribbons together with small, invisible stitches.
Layer the extra yardage of the two ribbons, wrap the layered ribbons on a package, and stitch or glue them at the center of the box. Stitch the pleated circles to the crossed ribbons at the package center.
