A Ribbon Runs Through It
Loops & Points
For a variation on the pleated ribbon, alternating loops and points add textural interest to garments, home décor projects and packages.
MATERIALS
- 1 yard yields 14 loops each 2 1/2" deep, for a finished length of 8". (See below to estimate yardage.)
To calculate the estimated ribbon yardage needed for a different size project, multiply the desired finished ribbon length by the depth of the loops, adding 1/4" at each end for finishing. For example, for an 8" finished length, start by multiplying 8" x 2 1/2" loop depth = 20". Multiply 20" x .7 (which is the set-back amount of a full fold) = 14. Add 20" + 14" + 1/2" for turn under at the ends = 34 1/2" of ribbon. A deeper loop or pleat will increase the .7 factor, while a shallower fold will decrease the .7 factor. For best results, test the fold's depth and length, using paper strips.
Following the instructions in Pleated Napkin Tie, make loops in one direction on the entire length of the ribbon.
Beginning with the first loop, fold the two outer corners back to form a triangular point. Pin the edges in place. Skip the next loop, and repeat the process on the third and fifth loops (4). Repeat the triangular fold on the alternating loops for the rest of the ribbon length.
With a threaded needle and beginning from the wrong side of the folded ribbon, bring the needle up through all the layers at one of the point's corners. Take a small stitch across to the other corner, securing the corners (5). Repeat to stitch the remaining points.
