Beauty Queen
What's the recipe for a beauty queen?
Start with one old prom dress or thrift store find, and then add a sash and crown. To complete the look, add a bouquet of roses and some tears of joy.
For a sash, purchase 5/8 yard of fabric, gold iron-on letters, and matching all-purpose and gold metallic thread.
Cut four 5"-wide strips across the fabric width. Right sides facing, stitch two strips together at one short end. Press open the seam. Repeat with the remaining two strips.
Right sides facing, meet the two fabric strips matching the seams and raw edges; pin. Drape the strip across one shoulder and mark the desired length. Cut both short ends at a 45° angle.
Using a 1/2" seam, stitch around the strip perimeter leaving an opening along one long edge for turning. Turn the strip right side out; press, turning under the opening edges.
Select a decorative stitch. Thread the machine with gold metallic thread and the bobbin with all-purpose thread. Edgestitch the strip perimeter; the stitching will close the opening.
Try on the sash. Pin-mark the lettering placement. Cut out the desired letters and position them on the sash. Iron the letters in place following the manufacturer's instructions.
To fasten the sash, insert a safety pin from the wrong side so it doesn't show.
To create the crown, you'll need a 9"x12"' felt rectangle, 1/2"-wide headband, heavy-weight fusible interfacing and an iron-on crystal design. (If you can't find a design, buy individual iron-on crystals and create your own.)
Fuse heavy-weight interfacing to the felt wrong side. Using the pattern, cut one crown from the felt. Wrong sides facing, turn up the lower edge 1 1/2"; stitch.
Position the crystal design on the crown right side. Fuse the crystals in place following the manufacturer's instructions.
Insert the headband in the casing and take your walk down the stage as "Ms. Sew News."
