Front & Center

Toggle Tips

  • Toggles can replace or be used in combination with buttons, zippers and snaps. They can be functional or purely decorative.

  • Toggles should be positioned directly over the center-front line.

  • The toggle-button size dictates the amount of cording required and the exact placement from the garment opening.

  • The toggle patches, which cover the cording ends, should be spaced equidistant from the garment's center-front edges.

  • Mock up a toggle closure before making all of the closures for a garment. Test the ease of fastening and unfastening to determine exactly how long the cording should be.

  • Experiment with a variety of shapes for the toggle patches--triangles, squares, circles and other simple shapes are all possibilities.

  • Cording and braid can stretch. Consider this factor when deciding how long the cording should be.

  • If you have trouble finding cording in the correct color, consider making your own from embroidery floss or perle cotton, which is readily available in a wide color range. Test the floss for colorfastness first. Twist or braid several strands tightly, cover with seam sealant and allow to dry. Seam sealant strengthens the twist and holds the strands together.
