Fright Light
Head to the sewing laboratory and scare up some eerie Halloween lampshade covers.
Reverse-appliqué motifs glow on a lampshade slipcover. Fusible web appliqué makes it quick and easy to create these seasonal decorations.
MATERIALS
- Black or orange cotton fabric for lampshade slipcover (see Make the Pattern for yardage)
- Scraps of light orange, yellow or green cotton fabric for reverse-appliqué motifs
- 1/4"-diameter cording with a lip (see Make the Pattern for amount)
- Scrap of 1"-wide ribbon to match cording
- Heavyweight paper-backed fusible web
- 1/2"-wide paper-backed fusible-web tape
- Pattern tracing cloth or tissue
- Fusible interfacing (optional)
Use 5/8" seam allowances and sew with right sides together unless otherwise specified. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for fusing the web and interfacing.
Choosing Materials
Choose a light-colored lampshade with flat sides, rather than complex curves like a Tiffany shade. A cone-shaped shade is an easy first project.
Choose 100% cotton fabrics for the slipcover--they hold up to the heat of a lightbulb and come in a variety of colors.
For the "glowing" motifs, choose a light-colored fabric. Try out potential fabrics by placing them on the lampshade with the light turned on to judge the effect.
For the background fabric, use a relatively dark fabric with a tight weave. To obtain the desired look, you shouldn't be able to see much light through the background fabric. If necessary, back the fabric with one or more layers of fusible interfacing, or fuse two fabric layers together to achieve the desired opaqueness.
