The Basics: Mastering Zippers

using a zipper foot

A standard sewing-machine foot isn't appropriate for applying zippers. A standard foot's "toes" prevent it from stitching close enough to the zipper teeth or coil. A zipper foot typically has only one toe, so it can come very close to the zipper teeth.

If you don't have a zipper foot, check with your local machine dealer. The foot needn't be specifically made for your machine, as long as it will properly attach to the machine and is centered over the feed dogs for even fabric feeding.

When using a zipper foot, adjust the position of the sewing machine needle if necessary. In most cases, the needle should be moved to the left of the zipper foot's toe. When in doubt, consult your sewing machine manual.
