The Basics: Mastering Zippers

basting tape

If you don't like basting, don't skip it altogether, use wash-away basting tape instead. Basting tape is a thin, double-sided tape with just enough tack to hold a zipper in place without leaving a residue on the fabric.

Roll out the basting tape and cut it to the desired length. Position the tape within the seam allowances, then peel off the backing. Press down firmly on the tape with your fingers. Use basting tape in place of pinning or sewing the zipper to the seam. You may also use basting tape to hold the seam allowances to the outer fabric when you topstitch.
