Made for Shade
Rollers & Shades
Adjustable rollers are available in shade kits that also include the backing, fusible web and hardware. However, the shade maximum width is 36" to 41". For wider shades, consider recycling hardware from an old shade, or purchasing an inexpensive shade and discarding the shade fabric. Rollers aren't readily available in home decorating stores, but may be found in specialty shops.
Fusible shade backings are made from white, nonwoven fabric with an adhesive on one side. The backing will allow some light to filter through. The room darkening quality depends on the weight and color of the fashion fabric fused to the backing. Shades made from dark-colored fabrics will absorb more light and will darken the room more. Other fabrics (such as canvas) may be bonded to the fashion fabric with fusible web to darken the room even more. Pretesting is essential to see if the fabrics will bond together and roll smoothly.
It's possible to make shades wider than the available backing. Cut and fuse the backing crosswise so the edges butt on the fashion fabric. Place a full-width panel at the shade lower edge so the piecing line is hidden when the shade is partially extended (1).
