Made for Shade
By Jane Schenck
A fabric-covered roller shade can add distinction to any room.
WITHOUT SEWING A STITCH, a plain shade can be made by ironing fabric to a fusible backing, trimming the edges and attaching the shade to a roller. By adding a stitched scalloped border and a decorative rod, a shade becomes both a decorative and functional room accent.
Shade Size
When designing a shade consider the window size, type of fabric and backing, as well as the roller size availability. Shades can be mounted inside a window casing (as photographed) or outside on the window frame.
For an inside mount, the window casing should be at least 1 1/2" deep so the shade can fit inside. To determine the width of the shade, mount the roller in the window and then measure the roller width.
For an outside mount, measure the width of the window opening plus 3". The finished shade should extend 1 1/2" beyond the glass on both sides.
The finished shade should be approximately 6" longer than the window. The extra allowance helps when rolling up the shade.
