Machine Embroidery: Coloring Embroidery

By Linda M. Visnaw

Use any embroidery design with an outline stitch, and a whole new world of creative coloring opens for you.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO MAKE AN EMBROIDERED GIFT but your time is limited? Dense stitch patterns take a long time to sew, so what's an embroiderer to do? Use your embroidery machine to draw designs, then color them using fabric markers and ink. It's fast, allows for creativity and isn't messy, so it's also a great activity for kids.

There are a variety of products on the market for coloring fabric, such as special markers that have a brush-like tip on one end and a rounded tip on the other. Other products are applied with brushes or foam tools. Quick, simple techniques provide many different looks--with a little practice, success will be yours.

No Embroidery Machine?

You can still enjoy embellishing projects with similar-looking techniques:

Draw your own designs, or transfer copyright-free images to the fabric using a light box or window.

Add stabilizer to the fabric wrong side, and free-motion stitch or thread-paint the motif outline. Use high-contrast thread to create bolder effects.

Color inside the stitched design using inks, markers or a combination of both.
