Roman shades are fast, fun and make great window accents--resurrect your basic math skills for a perfect fit!
FABRIC FOLDS ADD SOFTNESS to any window, and a Roman shade is a classic, tailored solution for both privacy and décor with aplomb. Our inside-mount, lined, classic Roman shade features folds seamed over dowels for precisely defined lines top to bottom whether the shade's up or down.
Measuring Up
Measure the window height and width inside the frame or the opening into which the shade will be mounted.
Select a 45"- to 54"-wide decorator fabric for the shade. To determine the cut size of the shade, follow this formula and refer to figure 1:
Length: First determine how many dowels will be necessary by dividing the window height by 6" to 9" (the space between each dowel fold). For a 64"-tall window, 8" divides evenly into 64 eight times, requiring eight dowels per shade.
Each dowel requires a 1 1/2" fold allowance. Eight dowels times 1 1/2" equals 12".
Add this number to the window height (64" +12" = 76"), then add a 6" header or mounting allowance (76" + 6" = 82" cut fabric length).
Width = window width + 2".
Depending on the window width, it may be necessary to seam the fabric together. If so, match the fabric pattern repeats exactly so the seam is less noticeable.
For the shade lining dimensions, use the actual window width and the shade-fabric cut length.
