Bib & Tucker

Bib & Tucker

By Barb Griffin

These darling bibs are strip-quilted, embellished with simple appliqués and finished with soft flannel backing.

Materials

For one basic pieced bib:
  • 1 1/4" x 45" strips of six different cotton or cotton/poly prints
  • 12" square each of white cotton flannel and quilt batting
  • 40" length of coordinating 1 1/2"-wide bias trim
  • Matching all-purpose and rayon threads

For the dinosaur appliqué:

  • Green cotton fabric scraps for dinosaur body and feet
  • 6" length of medium-width rickrack
  • 15" length of 4mm silk ribbon
  • Paper-backed fusible web
  • Tear-away stabilizer

For the teddy bear appliqué:

  • Tan and brown cotton fabric scraps for bear
  • Green and pink cotton fabric scraps for flower
  • 15" length of 4mm silk ribbon for neck bow
  • 6" length of yellow 4mm silk ribbon for flower center
  • Paper-backed fusible web
  • Tear-away stabilizer

The Basic Bib
  • Print the supplied bib pattern and enlarge as needed so that grid blocks measure 1" x 1". Cut out pattern, choosing either the scalloped or pointed outer edge.

  • Cut the fabric strips into 12" lengths and stack the strips in the order you wish to stitch them together.

  • Beginning at the left batting edge, place two fabric strips, right sides together, on the batting piece and stitch through all three layers with a 1/4" seam allowance; finger-press. Continue stitching strips together across the batting piece; press.
  • Fold the pieced square in half lengthwise and cut out the bib front.

Dinosaur Appliqué

  • Cut out the pieces and remove the paper. Position the body piece at the bib center front. Cut a short rickrack piece and carefully tuck it under the dinosaur's head so three small peaks show at the top. Tuck the remaining rickrack under the body so peaks show along the dinosaur's back. Fuse the body and feet in place.
  • Place the stabilizer on the bib front wrong side beneath the appliqué. Using a narrow satin stitch, stitch around the appliqué with coordinating rayon threads. Remove the stabilizer.

  • Tie a silk-ribbon bow with streamers. Position the bow at the neck and tack it in place. If desired, paint or stitch facial features.

Teddy Bear Appliqué

Note: If desired, substitute the balloon appliqué for the flower pictured.

  • Trace the bear and flower (or balloon) appliqué patterns on the fusible web paper side and fuse them to the fabric scrap wrong sides.

  • Cut out the pieces and remove the paper. Position the pieces at the bib center front and in place.

  • Place the stabilizer at the bib front wrong side beneath the appliqué. Using a narrow satin stitch, stitch around the appliqué with coordinating rayon threads. Remove the stabilizer.

  • Embroider a triple-wrap French knot with the yellow silk ribbon at the flower center.

  • Tie a silk ribbon bow with streamers. Position the bow at the bear's neck and tack in place. If desired, paint or stitch facial features.

Finishing

  • Position the 12" white flannel square with the fuzzy nap against the appliquéd bib right side. Stitch around the outer edge using 1/4" seam allowances, leaving the neckline edge open. Clip the curves and corners and turn right side out; press. Baste the neckline edge closed.

  • Topstitch 1/8" from the bib outer edge.

  • Mark the bias trim center and the bib neckline center front. Open the bias trim and pin it around the neckline, matching the center marks and leaving the ties free. Stitch the bias to the bib front neckline.

  • Trim the neckline seam allowance to 1/4". Fold the bias trim to the bib back, tucking under the raw edge, and stitch in the ditch to secure.

  • Fold the ties in half lengthwise with the raw edges tucked inside and press. Slipstitch or edgestitch the ties, then knot each end.
